An automatic screw machine is a specific type of lathe usually used to machine small to medium-sized circular and cylindrical components. Our Cam-Operated screw machines have several slides and spindles that all hold various types of tools (drills, form tools, milling cutters, taps, dies, etc.). These machines can work with great detail and complexity, and are capable of producing a large number of parts quickly.

Parts produced by this type of machining are commonly found in aerospace, appliance, consumer goods, electronics, marine, optical, railroad, recreation and telecommunications industries. Such as nozzles, shafts, inserts, standoffs, spacers, bushings, fittings, pins and similar products.

Compared to other machining and manufacturing processes, screw machining offers a number of benefits.


Automatic lathes are known for their extreme accuracy and precision. They can machine thousands of components to very tight tolerances and at the same time maintain these tolerances on part 1 just as well as part 1000.

Multiple operations

Automatic lathes can engage the material with multiple tools at once allowing for complex operations. An example of this is both a pre and finish turning operation happening at the same time. This also dramatically reduces the time required to manufacture the part.


Each lathe can carry up to 20 tools or more, with more advanced machines having automatic tool changers which can dramatically increase the number of tools available. This means that tools do not need to be changed every time a new part is to be machined. It can turn at rates greater than 10,000 RPM. Additionally, multiple spindles allow for increased efficiency of production.

High capacity

Turning is ideal for creating small parts that would otherwise be difficult to produce, as well as for larger parts that require attention to detail. Due to the material being supported so close to the guide bushing, heavier cuts can be taken without the part deflecting, this is yet another speed benefit for these types of lathes.
